Monitoring starts right in the supply chain mapping process when retailers, importers and brands gather information to assess potential social risks attached to their business partners, and decide whether or not they want to assess their social compliance level through a BSCI audit.
 

The Monitoring Process

Full Audit and Follow-Up Audit
Auditees are assessed through 13 Performance Areas and receive a performance rating going from A (outstanding) to E (unacceptable). The Performance Areas are the translation of the BSCI Code of Conduct into measurable practices.

Finding Report
Should an audit show deviations from the principles of the BSCI Code, the auditor prepares a finding report. The finding report includes good practices as well as areas for improvement. This report is crucial for the auditee when defining further actions to be taken to start driving improvements.

Remediation Plan
Following the audit, business partners have the responsibility to define and progressively implement a remediation plan within a period of 60 days.

A full audit is valid for two years if it yields an “A” or “B” rating. Otherwise it is valid until the follow-up audit takes place, which should be carried out within a maximum of 12 months. Nonetheless, BSCI’s monitoring process includes a zero tolerance protocol that requires immediate action when critical violations of human rights are identified.

How BSCI Works With Other Systems

BSCI cooperates actively with other organisations providing social audit systems to reduce audit fatigue, duplication of efforts and wasted resources by producers dealing with multiple audit systems and overlapping audit requests from their customers.

BSCI Collaborates with Rainforest Alliance

Since 2012, BSCI and the Rainforest Alliance are working together to reduce the number of audits conducted for producers that supply companies that are members of both initiatives.
