FTA and the International Organization for Migration Discuss Labour Migration

29-11-2016

FTA Director General, Christian Ewert and Senior Manager Stakeholder Engagement, Anisha Rajapakse met with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Geneva last week to discuss protection of migrant workers and optimising the benefits of labour migration in supply chains.

Participants: The meeting also included Deputy Director General, Ambassador Laura Thompson and Senior Labour Migration Specialist, Lara White.

Outcome: The meeting provided a valuable opportunity for both organisations to explore opportunities for collaboration and partnership.  In particular, how IOM and FTA could collectively address the issue of unethical recruitment as it is continuing to be and escalating problem requiring a global solution.

Next steps: Preliminary discussions were had regarding the IOM’s International Recruitment Integrity System (IRIS) which is an international voluntary 'ethical recruitment' framework that has the potential to benefit BSCI members in the labour recruitment process; and provide a platform for addressing unfair and unethical recruitment.
